Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park has more than meets the eye. As you drive around the park, you’ll be able to enjoy subtle differences in prairie grasses, striped rocks and various colors. The park encompasses 244,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and is home to bison, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep and other wildlife.

Badlands National Park is a good park for a non-hiker, because there are many overlooks that you can enjoy next to the parking lot. However, hikers can still enjoy some adventures, including a trail with a large ladder, backcountry exploration, and short climbs up and down the badlands.

Badlands is particularly good for anyone who loves wildlife photography, as it’s quite common to spot animals large and small. This park is perfect for someone who wants to do a South Dakota road trip, and makes a great day trip from Rapid City.

The Best Things To Do in Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park

Drive the Badlands Loop Road. Everyone should spend some time driving the Badlands Loop Road, and enjoying overlooks along the way. A few of my favorite stops are Panorama Point, Yellow Mounds Overlook and Pinnacles Overlook.

Hike the Notch Trail, Window Trail and Door Trails. These three short trails leave from the same parking lot, and have beautiful views. The Notch Trail features the ladder, which feels unique.

Drive Sage Creek Rim Road. This is another scenic drive that branches off from the Loop Road. Don’t miss Roberts Prairie Dog Town!
