If you’re wondering about the best US national parks to visit in February, let this be your guide. Whether you’re looking for ideas for a holiday weekend, or want to break up the gloominess that winter brings, several US national parks are beautiful in the winter.
Winter can be a challenging time to visit many of the US national parks. The high altitude parks usually receive a lot of snow in the winter. The snow is beautiful, but it brings a lot of extra considerations, such as tire chains, road closures, and special hiking gear.
With those factors in mind, I mostly kept this list to the national parks with warmer climates. However, I also listed a few national parks at the bottom that are likely to bring about a winter wonderland!
I’m an avid national park traveler who has almost been to all 63 US national parks, and these picks are based on my experiences in the parks. Use this list to come up with ideas for a winter national park trip, and guide your planning process.

12 of the Best National Parks to Visit in February
1. Everglades National Park, California
Average temperatures in February: 79° F / 64° F
The Everglades encompass a massive area of South Florida. In fact, this is the 3rd largest national park in the lower 48. The park protects wetland landscapes, pine forests, marine habitats, and more. This park has more variety than you might think.
On a trip to Everglades National Park, you can enjoy boat tours, kayaking, hiking, biking, and more. It’s an amazing park for wildlife, and you’re practically guaranteed to see alligators. One of the most unique activities in the Everglades is to take a ranger-led wet walk where you’ll walk out into the swamp. I loved doing this!
You should visit this national park during the dry season, which is from November to April. These months bring lower humidity, fewer mosquitoes and lower water levels. February can be busy, but it tends to not be as busy as March. If you live somewhere colder, this is a wonderful time to escape winter with a trip to South Florida.

2. Yosemite National Park, California
Average temperatures in February: 52° F / 30° F
Yosemite is the only high altitude park that I’m adding to this list, because a unique phenomenon occurs in February. February is when you can see the famous Firefall, which occurs when Horsetail Fall glows orange when it’s backlit by the sunset.
You have a chance to see Firefall from mid to late February, and the waterfall starts to illuminate right before sunset. However, conditions need to be right, so this doesn’t occur everyday. You need enough water and clear skies to see the effect.
Previously, reservations were needed to experience Firefall, but they were not required in 2026. Either way, make sure to plan ahead and go early, as this is a very popular event.
3. Joshua Tree National Park, California
Average temperatures in February: 63° F / 38° F
Joshua Tree is a California park known for its rock formations, desert plants and famous joshua trees. Joshua trees are actually part of the Agave family, and they are an iconic part of the Mojave desert. This is a great park for hiking, camping, and scenic drives.
As a desert park, it’s best to avoid visiting during the summer. February brings cool daytime hiking weather and cold nights. March is one of the busiest months, so February can be a less crowded time. It could snow in the higher altitudes at the beginning of February, but it’s unlikely.
Personally, I visited in February and the weather was great, but I still found it to be quite crowded.

4. Death Valley National Park, California
Average temperatures in February: 73° F / 46° F
Death Valley is the warmest place in the continental US, so winter is the prime time to visit. Not only do they have the highest temperature ever recorded, but the park is also home to the lowest spot in the United States. With mountains, salt flats, sand dunes, and more, this park is full of extremes.
Due to the high heat, you should stick with visiting Death Valley in the winter. This is extra important if you’ll be doing any significant hiking. Severe summer heat leads to fatalities each year.
February is a great time to visit, as it brings sunny days and chilly nights. February can be busy, but not as busy as March. Pack layers and enjoy some sunrises, and I think you’ll have a great experience.

5. Haleakalā National Park, Hawaii
Average temperatures in February: 50° F / 35° F (summit)
Haleakalā has quite a drastic change in altitude. There are two main areas: the Summit district and the Kīpahulu District. The Summit reaches an altitude of over 10,000 feet, so it can be quite cold in February. It can even snow up there year round.
February brings nice weather to the lower areas of the park, where you can enjoy hiking among lush greenery and waterfalls.
One of the best things to do in Haleakalā National Park is watching the sunrise at the summit. You’ll need a reservation to enter at this time, so make sure to obtain it ahead of time. Pack warm layers for sunrise, as it can be very windy and cold.

6. Virgin Islands National Park
Average temperatures in February: 76° F / 71° F
Virgin Islands National Park is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, along with great snorkeling, historic sites, hiking trails, and wildlife. It’s an amazing place for a relaxing, yet still adventurous, national park vacation.
A lot of people visit this park via a cruise ship, but I recommend spending a few days there if you can. You can fly into St. Thomas and take a ferry over to St. John, which is where the national park is located.
The best time to visit this park is between December and June, as July to November is hurricane season. February brings warm and humid days, and is one of the busiest months to visit. Personally, I visited in February and had a great experience.

7. Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
Average temperatures in February: 76° F / 66° F
Dry Tortugas National Park is very unique, but requires some extra planning. It’s located 70 miles off the coast of Key West, and can only be reached by boat or sea plane. The island is home to a historic army fort, and is rich in birdlife, aquatic life and unique vegetation.
February tends to bring nice weather to Southern Florida, and is one of the peak times to visit. Make sure to book your lodging ahead of time.
In order to visit Dry Tortugas, make sure to book your ferry ride at least a couple months ahead of time. It sells out early. You also have the option to book a sea plane to reach the island.
As long as you can book far enough ahead to get your spot, Dry Tortugas is a beautiful and unique park that makes for an epic winter vacation.

8. Arches National Park, Utah
Average temperatures in February: 52° F / 28° F
Arches is an iconic national park for good reason. As you can probably guess, there are hundreds of arch formations all over the park. You can hike to the stunning Delicate Arch (seen on Utah license plates), see double arches, and admire all sorts of shapes and sizes of these neat formations.
This park is great for hiking and has a variety of trails that range from easy to difficult. February brings cold weather and low crowd levels. It can be snowy and icy in February, so come prepared with microspikes and warm clothing. Stick to the end of the month if you’re hoping to avoid snow.
If you’re prepared, winter can be a peaceful and beautiful time in Southern Utah.
9. Saguaro National Park, Arizona
Average temperatures in February: 69° F / 43° F
Saguaro is a desert national park, so you’ll have more pleasant temperatures in the fall, winter and spring. It’s famous for being home to a high concentration of the largest cacti in the world. Along with desert plants, the park also has mountains, waterfalls, and more.
February brings comfortable daytime temperatures for hiking, and cooler temperatures at night. However, February can be the busiest month in Tucson, as the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show occurs in February. Book your lodging early, and arrive at the trailheads early in the morning to avoid crowds.

10. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hawai'i
Average temperatures in February: 54° F / 29° F
Hawai’i Volcanoes is home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world! This unique park is constantly evolving due to volcanic eruptions from Kīlauea, and it’s home to lava tubes, craters, cinder cones, and more.
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park tends to be comfortable to visit year round, but summers bring higher heat. The busiest times of year in this park are summer and winter, especially during the holidays. February tends to be a quieter time, and brings cool weather.
No matter when you visit, be prepared with sun protection, as there isn’t a lot of shade in much of this park.

11. Biscayne National Park, Florida
Average temperatures in February: 79° F / 64° F
Biscayne is a park known for its coral reefs and marine life. In fact, the park is 95% underwater. When you visit, you’ll want to get out on the water. There are a few different tour options offered by the Biscayne National Park Institute, and I enjoyed taking one that combined both snorkeling and paddle boarding.
It’s best to visit Biscayne during the dry season, which is from December to April. February can be a little chilly for snorkeling, but is a great time for activities like kayaking.

12. Big Bend National Park, Texas
Average temperatures in February: 64° F / 42° F
Big Bend is a West Texas national park home to mountains, hot springs, rock formations, canyons, and rivers. It sits on a bend of the Rio Grande River, right on the border of Mexico. It’s also known for its incredible night skies.
February is a good time to visit Big Bend for mild daytime temperatures, and cooler nights. February can be quite busy, but not as busy as March. February can also bring some large temperature swings, so make sure to pack layers.

National Parks that are Great for Winter Snow
If you want to visit a national park that gets a lot of snow in the winter, here are some ideas! (Perhaps you’re dreaming of a white Christmas).
There is a lot to consider before traveling to high elevation areas in the winter. Be sure to carry tire chains and check the current rules on that for the area, and come prepared with the right gear, ie microspikes, if you plan to hike.
